Douglas fir is a California native tree, but is also native to the Pacific northwest forests where it is known to reach 250 feet. In cultivation it is more likely to only reach 80-160 feet. It has also been imported into the British Isles and one specimen is reputed to be Britain’s tallest tree.

Notice how the cones hang down from the branches, different from the true firs (Abies species) whose cones stand upright.
