Western red cedar (also called giant arborvitae) is native from northern California to Alaska. It is a tall (50 -100 ft.) conifer with broadly spreading branches. Many cultivars of various sizes are available, several with foliage that emerges pale green or gold in the spring. Its aromatic foliage is noticeable while standing beneath the tree and especially pungent when crushed in the hand.
