Purple leaf plum is an extremely commonly grown species. The book “Trees of San Francisco” lists it as San Francisco’s #1 most popular tree. It’s one of the first trees to bloom in the spring, followed by purple leaves. It’s a good choice for small spaces because it grows slowly to 30 ft., usually less.

It is less attractive late in the summer and early fall when, often, the leaves have been disfigured by aphid feeding and tend to drop earlier than other deciduous trees.
