Italian stone pine is a conifer native to southern Europe and Turkey. It is the tree that resembles a giant umbrella in the Italian landscape and its seeds are edible (pine nuts or pinole). Our California native pinon pine also produces edible nuts.
Italian stone pine is very widely planted all over the SF Bay Area. It is a handsome, large tree to 80 ft. and almost as wide. Care should be taken when planting to avoid structural defects such as codominant stems and girdling roots.
