Monterey pine is a conifer native to three coastal locations in Central California. It has been introduced to several southern hemisphere countries and grown widely for lumber and paper in those locations.

It is an attractive, fast growing tree to 80 ft. or more and for years was planted widely in California cities. Unfortunately, during recent drought periods, many suffered serious decline and death due to infestation by bark beetles and is continuing in 2022. Also, in 1986 a disease called Pine Pitch Canker emerged.
