The palms in the genus Phoenix are commonly called date palms. Male and female flowers are formed on separate plants. The females, if grown in proximity to males, produce dates. Unfortunately, the dates of Canary Island date palm are unpalatable to humans and create a nuisance when they fall to the ground. The seeds are spread around by wildlife and it’s not unusual to see one of these palms pop up in an unexpected place. The dates we like the taste of are produced by Phoenix dactylifera which is native to the middle east, but grows in the Palm Springs area in California. Canary Island date palms are a common sight in Larkspur neighborhoods especially around older homes.
