Madrone berries appear in December

Madrone is a wonderful evergreen tree native from British Columbia to southern California, mostly in the coast ranges. It is distinguished by its peeling outer bark which reveals a smooth reddish orange inner bark that feels cool to the touch even on a hot summer day.
It is a species that is notoriously difficult to maintain in urban locations and is usually only found on undisturbed properties that abut wildlands.

Along  Sir Francis Drake Blvd. west of Fairfax during most of the year, the madrones on the hillsides are lost in a sea of green, but in the winter the bright orange-red berries make them visible.
