Red maple leaves are three or five lobed and show brilliant  fall color.

Red maple is a deciduous species native to the eastern US in areas where soils stay fairly moist. One common name for the species is swamp maple. It is appearing in California urban settings in increasing frequency. The appeal is probably that there are many cultivars and hybrids that show spectacular fall color in shades of red and orange. It is considered fast growing to 60 ft. or more. The test will be how they perform in the next severe drought.

The Doherty Drive renovation was completed in the fall of 2012. Twenty four red maples and 10 crape myrtles were planted on the south side of the road.
