Water gum is an evergreen tree native to western Australia. It is often called “small leaf tristania” because it once belonged to the genus Tristania which was split into three genera (Tristania, Lophostemon and Tristaniopsis) in 1982. It is considered to be slow growing, but may reach 45 ft. in ideal growing conditions. The clusters of yellow flowers appear in July followed by seed pods that resemble those of eucalyptus, but tiny. Bark is gray, becoming scaly with age. This is the species chosen in the Magnolia Ave Beautification Plan to eventually replace the carobs along the middle section of downtown Magnolia Ave.
